Substitute Teacher Training
How to Become a Substitute Teacher and Minimum Requirements
- Email Allyson Harrison at allyson.harrison@greene.k12.ga.us to inform her you are interested in becoming a substitute teacher. If you are a certified teacher, please attach a copy of your certificate to the email of interest. Candidate must possess at least a high school diploma or GED.
- Evidence of being at least 21 years of age.
- Must consent to a background check.

Required Training
The Greene County School System requires substitute teachers to participate in a training program provided by Northeast Georgia RESA. Applicants may complete the training online or in-person.
- For the in-person option,
- (for workshop dates, and to register for a Substitute Teacher Training Class, visit the Northeast Georgia RESA website (https://www.negaresa.org/substitute-teacher-training) to determine the date and location of an available session.
- There is a cost to take the class (credit card only-online payment). Substitutes must complete the entire training, so make sure you arrive early as the course begins promptly. Individuals arriving more than ten minutes after the starting time will not be admitted and will need to register for another workshop.

- For the online training option, click here: Greene County Online Substitute Teacher Training registration. The cost of the online training is free through December 2025. Beginning in January 2026, the cost of the training will be $25.
- If you have a valid current or expired teaching certificate from the United States, you are EXEMPT from taking the online Substitute Training Course. Please email a copy of your certificate to allyson.harrison@greene.k12.ga.us. If you have a CURRENT state of GEORGIA paraprofessional certificate, you are also EXEMPT from taking the online course; please email your certificate to allyson.harrison@greene.k12.ga.us.
- Once you have successfully completed the training (either online or in-person), your certificate will be e-mailed to you and the Greene County School District.
- Your application will be reviewed, and, if you are selected for hire, you will be invited to attend a substitute orientation and on-boarding session.
