GCSS Athletics to implement security wand screening at all sporting events effective Sept. 29th

August 31, 2023

Greensboro, Ga. – GCSS Athletics will implement the use of handheld security wands to screen attendees at all home sporting events, beginning on Friday, September 29th with the Tiger Football Homecoming game.

GCHS Athletic Director Chad Smith said the new security procedure is being taken in light of recent safety incidents that have happened at athletic events in other school systems.

“This effort is just one proactive measure used to help ensure the safety and security of students and staff and to maintain a family-friendly and fun atmosphere for the fans at our athletic events,” AD Smith said. “The process is similar to what is done at sporting venues across Georgia and nationwide.”

Smith said the GCSS Athletics leadership team continuously reviews its safety practices in preparation for each home athletic event to ensure the schools are taking a holistic approach to campus safety that is in line with the latest recommendations and best practices for providing a safe environment for all in attendance.

The district’s clear bag policy for athletic events also remains in place this school year. The policy allows clear totes up to 12” x 6” x 12” in size, Ziploc bags up to one gallon in size, and clutch purses up to 6.5” x 4.5.” Not allowed are bookbags of any type, including clear or mesh bookbags, along with large totes, purses, and camera bags.

“School safety is a shared responsibility,” AD Smith continued, “and we appreciate the community’s continued support in keeping our sporting events safe and secure while we celebrate the great efforts of our student athletes and their coaches.”
