Greene County holds third REACH Georgia Scholarship Signing Day

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, Greene County named five new REACH Georgia scholars, who signed their scholarship commitments at the third annual REACH Signing Day ceremony.

Surrounded by their parents, 8th graders Tiejah Darby, Ry’Yunnah Parrish, Shayla Pope, and Jada Walker from Anita White Carson Middle School and Noah Human from Lake Oconee Academy signed their scholarship commitments to maintain good grades and behavior and meet regularly with their mentors during high school in preparation for college.

REACH is Georgia's first needs-based scholarship. It began in 2012 and came to Greene County in 2017. Each REACH Georgia county may award scholarships to up to five top-quality 8th graders.

For each REACH scholarship, (for which the total funding exceeds $20,000 after donations from the Georgia Student Finance Authority, statewide corporations and private donations, plus matching donations from Georgia's college and universities) the inital $2,500 must come from private donations right here in Greene County. Each scholarship sponsor is known as a legacy donor. This year, the five legacy donors included the BankSouth Foundation, Sally and J. Boswell, Mike and Joyce Daniel, Louie H. Seabolt and Jane M. Hutterly, and the Lake Oconee Academy Foundation.

At the scholars signed their pledges, they were cheered on by a crowd of supporters and donors from the Greene County community who later took their own pledge to support these students on their educational journey.
