An Update from Superintendent Dr. Chris Houston on Greene County's return to school in Fall 2020
Dear Greene County Families,
Our Return to School Task Force continues to work daily on developing a plan for reopening school that is designed to maximize precautions to protect the health and safety of our students and staff while maintaining the highest standards of teaching and learning.
Developing a final plan, however, has been complicated by ever-changing guidance from state leadership. Although our plan is near completion, the Georgia Department of Education and Georgia Department of Public Health regularly release new recommendations for school operations, with more changes promised over the next few weeks.
As we receive these new directions on a rolling basis, our task force remains flexible and incorporates the latest guidelines into our plan to ensure our return to school is in line with the most up-to-date recommendations from state health and education officials. We hope to have a foundational plan with contingencies to present to the Board of Education at next month’s meeting on July 13th.
In an effort to accommodate as much face-to-face instruction as possible, we are working on a variety of practical safety measures to protect our students on the bus and in their school buildings. We are already installing these safeguards in our schools to prepare for a successful Day One on August 17th.
These safety measures include:
• Additional hand-washing stations throughout our schools
• Plexiglass partitions installed in our lunchroom service lines and between the sinks in our restrooms
• Additional hand sanitizer stations across our campuses
• Touchless water bottle refill stations
• Handheld no-contact temperature scanners
• Touchless temperature measurement kiosks
• Rearranging our classrooms to facilitate social distancing
• Limiting the number of adults in each building by restricting visitor and volunteer access
• Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures by our custodial team to keep all surfaces continuously sanitized
• Researching various class scheduling alternatives and instructional delivery methods to reduce the number of students and staff in any one space
As we have considered safeguards to implement in our schools, your feedback from the Parent Survey on Reopening Greene County Schools has been invaluable. Thank you for your patience and support as we plan for the safest way to begin the 2020-2021 school year. And again, please be assured that your child’s safety is our top priority.
Sincerely,
Dr. Chris Houston, Superintendent
