Greene County rests in the middle of Georgia far away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Atlanta. It is a community with its roots entrenched in agriculture and textile manufacturing. In driving through our county you would see dairy farms, beef cattle grazing and forest land. Greene County has seen many changes over the past several years. One part of our county remains rural agrarian while another boasts beautiful Lake Oconee with new growth and endless possibilities for employment for students of the Greene County School District. 

Founded in 1786, Greensboro is steeped in history and its streets are lined with beautiful Antebellum homes, vacation homes and golf vacation rentals. Greensboro, the county seat, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a multiple resource area with five historic districts and seven individual sites, Greensboro is home to such places as the third oldest courthouse in Georgia and the Old Greene County Gaol (Jail). The Courthouse was built in 1848, and the original structure is still in use today. The Old Gaol, built in 1807, is one of the oldest penal structures in Georgia. Other sites include the Iron Horse, Scull Shoals, Penfield, Bethesda Baptist Church, and Bethany Presbyterian Church. These can be seen on one of the driving tours available through the Greene County Chamber of Commerce.

In Greensboro the sidewalk of the revitalized downtown is lined with shade trees and antique shops. The city and this part of Georgia is booming because of growth around Lake Oconee. Not only is golf a highlight in Greensboro, but history buffs, antique shoppers, fishermen and hunters all enjoy the varied sites and recreational opportunities that are available.

Greene and two neighboring counties market the region as "Georgia's Lake Country." Greensboro, Eatonton and Madison surround Lake Oconee. All three communities are rich in arts & culture and have their share of shopping and dining opportunities. Nine golf courses, including some of the nation's top-rated real estate courses have earned the region a reputation as a golfer's paradise. Fishing, Boating, and other outdoor activities, along with Championship Golf, are among some of the favorite recreational opportunities in the Lake Oconee area. The Lake Oconee Area is located conveniently off I-20, only an hour from Atlanta, Augusta, and Athens.

Greene's population grew by more than 22% in the 1990s. Much of that growth was around Lake Oconee and its booming Lakefront developments. Greene County offers a variety of residential opportunities depending upon one’s lifestyle and taste. This includes some of the finest planned communities in the country such as Reynolds Plantation, Reynolds Landing, and Harbor Club; antebellum homes; or small farms. There is something here for everyone!
