Competency-Based Education is a learning model where students advance by demonstrating mastery of clearly defined learning goals.

Instead of focusing primarily on grades, CBE focuses on ensuring students truly learn and can apply important concepts and skills.
When your child graduates and steps into the workforce or college, no one is going to ask them how many hours they sat in a classroom chair. They are going to ask: "What can you do, what problems can you solve, and how well can you work with others?"
That is the heart of Competency-Based Education (CBE)—our district's commitment to shifting away from traditional schooling and moving toward a model where true understanding and real-world skills matter most.

Traditional Learning
Seat Time: Students advance based on the calendar and how many days they sit in class.
One-Shot Testing: A single bad test day can ruin a grade, leaving gaps in a child's knowledge.
Just "Getting By": A student can pass with a 70% and carry a 30% gap in knowledge to the next grade.

What Does Learning Look Like?
Students will continue learning reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and other core subjects. However, they may have more opportunities to demonstrate learning through authentic tasks and projects. These experiences help students connect classroom learning to the real world while demonstrating mastery of important standards and skills.
Elementary
Instead of simply identifying geometric shapes on a worksheet, students might design a playground, garden, or classroom space using those shapes and explain their thinking.
Middle
Instead of only reading about environmental issues, students might investigate a local challenge, analyze data, and propose solutions to community stakeholders.
High
Instead of memorizing information solely for a test, students may complete projects that require research, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and presentation skills similar to those used in college and careers.
The world our students are entering requires more than memorizing information for a test. Today's graduates need to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate with others, solve complex problems, and adapt to new challenges. Competency-Based Education helps students develop these skills while ensuring they master academic content.
Research and experience show that a single test or assignment does not always provide a complete picture of what a student knows. CBE gives students multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning and show growth over time.
This approach helps us answer an important question: Can the student actually apply what they have learned?
Our Partnership with Marzano Academics
We haven’t built this new approach in a vacuum. Our district has made a multi-year commitment to this model through a formal partnership with the Marzano Academies, a globally recognized leader in research-backed school improvement.
To ensure we get this right, we launched our implementation slowly. Our Middle School served as our pilot "Lab School" last year, allowing our instructional coaches to perfect teaching strategies, pacing, and feedback models before rolling them out across our elementary and high schools. Because each school is moving deliberately, you will see different stages of this rollout depending on your child's grade level.
Our Implementation Roadmap
Our transition to a fully competency-based district is a journey, not an overnight switch.
Last School Year - Middle school staff fully trained in Marzano CBE methods. Classroom pilots rolled out for core subjects to establish best practices and District-Wide Portrait of a Graduate Integration
Current School Year - All schools begin embedding the Portrait of a Graduate proficiency scales into student projects and feedback loops.
Next School Year & Beyond - Elementary and high schools begin rolling out subject-specific mastery pacing, building upon the frameworks tested at our middle school lab campus.
