GCSS COVID-19 Weekly Status Updates
The Greene County School System’s COVID-19 Weekly Status Updates summarize the new positive cases and quarantines each week within the population of students who are attending school in-person and the population of staff members who are working in-person at a school or the district office. These reports do not include virtual-only distance learning students or staff members who are working solely from home and do not come to campus. These reports are not cumulative from week to week.
NOTE: When the report states that an individual began quarantine due to symptoms, this means that person presented one or more COVID-like symptoms such as, but not limited to, fever, congestion, sore throat, headache, nausea, etc. However, these symptoms are also those of the flu, common cold, seasonal allergies, and other illnesses. COVID-like symptoms alone do not indicate a confirmed case.
NOTE: These reports do not include data from Lake Oconee Academy, which reports its COVID-19 data separately.

GCSS announces return to a 5-day, in-person school week (1/27/2021)
Traducción al español disponible a continuación.
Given the declining community spread of COVID-19 in our area and a decrease in the number of virtual learning students across the district, Greene County Schools will return to a 5-day, Monday-Friday, in-person school week beginning next week, February 1-5th. Fridays will no longer be distance learning days for all students.
As we prepare to return to full-time in-person learning, please take a moment to review the following reminders:
- Bus riders: Please remember to arrive at your bus stop 10 minutes before your designated stop time in the morning so that the school buses do not have to wait on students and can complete their routes on time.
- Pre-K and GCPS parents: Please remember that an adult must be present to receive your student when they get off the bus each afternoon.
- All parents: Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date in Parent Portal. If you need help logging in to Parent Portal, please call us at 706-453-7688 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to educate, inspire, challenge, and support the students of Greene County.

Academic Calendar Change and Phase III Update (1/12/2021)
ATTENTION PARENTS: Next week, January 19-22, will be a Winter Break holiday for all students. After Winter Break, beginning on Monday, January 25th, all students will return to school for in-person learning 4 days per week Monday-Thursday, with distance learning every Friday.
At its monthly meeting on January 11, 2021, the Greene County Board of Education voted to amend the GCSS 2020-2021 Academic Calendar to remove the February Intersession and move Winter Break to next week, January 19-22, trading what would have been a week of virtual learning for a week of face-to-face instruction later on this semester. These changes create a weeklong break for students in January at a time when community spread of COVID-19 is at its highest point since March 2020.
Moving a holiday to January will allow the community spread to subside and enables our students to finish the school year strong by buying some time to get them back in school for an additional week of in-person learning in the coming months.
Following Winter Break, all schools will return to in-person instruction 4 days per week, Monday-Thursday, for all students as described in the previously announced Phase III Reopening Plan, beginning on Monday, January 25th. Fridays will remain distance learning days for all students.
The amendment to the GCSS 2020-2021 Academic Calendar includes the following changes:
- Changed January 19-22, 2021 from regular school days to holidays.
- Changed February 16-19, 2021 from Intersession days to regular school days.
January 18th (Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday) will remain as originally scheduled, and February 12th will remain a school holiday. February 15th will become a holiday for students and staff. Together, February 12th & 15th will serve as the President's Day holiday. You may find the revised GCSS 2020-2021 Academic Calendar here on our website.
