BOE chairman retires, new chairman and District 4 representative appointed
On February 15th, Greene County Board of Education Chairman Mike Lynch submitted a letter of resignation to Governor Brian Kemp—resigning from his position effective February 28, 2023. The Board has appointed District 4 Representative Dr. Perry Lee to fill the Chairman position for the remainder of the unexpired term, and appointed community member and retired educator Dr. Maggie Kjer to fill the District 4 Representative seat for the remainder of that unexpired term.

4th Grade to be located at GCPS for 2023-2024
In January, the BOE voted to relocate 4th grade from its current location at Anita White Carson Middle School to Greene County Primary School for the 2023-2024 school year, allowing current 3rd graders to remain at their school for another year.

GCCA students explore careers with businesses across Greene County on National Job Shadow Day
GCCA students explored careers with businesses across Greene County last week on National Job Shadow Day on Feb. 2nd! On this day, students had the opportunity to shadow people who are working in career fields they are interested in pursuing.

GCHS senior Arkiyus Wright signs with Cumberland University
GCHS senior Arkiyus Wright signed his letter of intent to play football at Cumberland University on Feb. 2, National Signing Day. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound defensive recorded 53 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss through 10 games this past season. He also pulled down a team-high four interceptions for the Tigers during his senior campaign. Offensively, Wright hauled in 10 receptions for 145 receiving yards and a touchdown.

CMS Principal DeAndra Lanier announces retirement, AP Tanisha Wright to be named Interim Principal
CMS Assistant Principal Mrs. Tanisha Wright has been named Associate Principal of Anita White Carson Middle School. Following the upcoming retirement of current CMS Principal Mrs. DeAndra Lanier in May 2023, Mrs. Wright will become the school’s Interim Principal for the 2023-2024 school year.

Ryan Evans named STAR Student for Greene County High School
Greene County High School senior Ryan Evans has been named the school’s 2023 PAGE STAR Student. Evans selected Megan Calicott, a science teacher at Greene County High School, as his STAR Teacher. Evans is the son of Mr. Ward Evans of Greensboro and is a GCHS All-A Honor Roll student.

GCSS holds Student Technology Competition, will send winners to regional competition in January
In conjunction with the Georgia State Technology Competition, the Greene County School System held a district-wide Student Technology Competition for all students in Grade 3-12.

BOE recognizes District 3 member Clarence Hunt for 8 years of service upon his retirement from the board
The Greene County Board of Education recognized District 3 Board Member Clarence Hunt Jr. on Thursday evening for his dedicated service to the BOE and to the students of Greene County, and congratulated him on his retirement.

GCSS 2022 College & Career Performance Readiness Index (CCRPI) scores released
Georgia’s 2022 College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI) results were released by the Georgia Department of Education on Wednesday, Nov. 16th and show that while the Greene County School System is still recovering learning gaps caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, the gaps in many areas have already been closed and surpassed, and in all areas, the GCSS is closing COVID learning gaps faster than the state overall.

MIT program coordinator and GCHS alum Marcus Mundy returns to Greene County to share STEM opportunities with students
MIT program coordinator and GCHS graduate (’09) Marcus Mundy returned to Greene County last week to present to GCHS’s junior class about the MITES program (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science), a rigorous six-week residential summer program that introduces promising minority high school seniors to engineering and science.

GCPS wins School Bell Award from GAESP for innovative RISE reading program
Greene County Primary School has received the School Bell Award from the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals (GAESP) for its innovative work in reading comprehension with second and third grade reading students through the RISE Program (Reading Inspires Students to Excel).

GCSS names five students to 2023 REACH Georgia Scholarship cohort
The Greene County School System (GCSS) has named five 8th grade students to this year’s class of REACH Georgia Scholarship recipients. TiraJai Heath, Jamari Johnson, Justin Robertson, and Torriah Stinson from Anita White Carson Middle School and Jack Alvarez from Lake Oconee Academy make up the Greene County School System's sixth class of REACH scholars since the school system joined the program in 2017.

GCSS names 2022-2023 Teachers of the Year
The Greene County School System named Sharda Massey its 2023 District Teacher of the Year and recognized all three school Teachers of the Year at a reception on October 4.
