Greene County BOE approves 5-year charter extension for LOA
The Greene County Board of Education approved a 5-year charter extension for Lake Oconee Academy at its regular meeting on Thursday, Nov. 16th. The new charter, which will begin in July 2024, goes next to the Georgia State Board of Education for approval.

GCSS names six students to 2024 REACH Georgia Scholarship cohort
The Greene County School System (GCSS) has named six 8th grade students to this year’s class of REACH Georgia Scholarship recipients. India Armstrong, Kaden Ferrell, Sydney Ford, Carmen Freeman, and Ja’Mia Gresham from Anita White Carson Middle School and Marcus Rhodes from Lake Oconee Academy make up the Greene County School System's seventh class of REACH scholars since the school system joined the program in 2017 under the guidance and encouragement of GCSS REACH Coordinator Mrs. Beth Thomas and Mr. Tom Kelly, the co-founder with his wife Kathy of the Greensboro Dreamers.

Greensboro begins warning period for new school zone speed safety cameras
In a joint effort by the Greene County School System and Greensboro Police Department to improve campus safety by enforcing school zone speed limits, Greensboro will begin issuing warnings for the new school zone speed cameras on Main Street on October 30.

GCPS first grade teacher Cameron Shuler named GCSS Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Ms. Cameron Shuler, GCSS 2023-2024 District Teacher of the Year! 🏆 Ms. Shuler is a 1st Grade teacher at Greene County Primary School and was honored with the surprise announcement at the district's annual Teacher of the Year Reception.

Greene County Primary School named a 2022-2023 Title I Reward School by the Georgia Department of Education.
GCPS was recently included among 154 Georgia schools recognized as Distinguished or Reward Schools. The Reward Schools designation recognizes Title I schools making the most significant improvements.

GCSS celebrates excellence in teaching by naming three 2023-2024 Teachers of the Year
The Greene County School System has announced its 2023-2024 Teachers of the Year. First grade teacher Cameron Shuler is Greene County Primary School’s Teacher of the Year, sixth grade math teacher Ashley Bridges is Anita White Carson Middle School’s Teacher of the Year, and Greene College & Career Academy Early Childhood Education pathway instructor Laura Ringer is Teacher of the Year at Greene County High School.

GCSS Athletics to implement security wand screening at all sporting events effective Sept. 29th
GCSS Athletics will implement the use of handheld security wands to screen attendees at all home sporting events, beginning on Friday, September 29th with the Tiger Football Homecoming game.

Greene County BOE approves rollback millage rate and FY24 budget
The Greene County Board of Education approved a rollback millage rate for the 5th consecutive year and the Fiscal Year 2024 budget at its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, August 17th. At 10.311 this year, the Greene County BOE millage rate is among the 10 lowest school board millage rates in the state.

GCSS celebrates groundbreaking of new Greene County Elementary School building on Meadow Crest Road
Parents, students, faculty and staff, the Board of Education, and many Greene County community members gathered on Tuesday, August 1st to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Pre-K—5 Greene County Elementary School building on Meadow Crest Road.

Making the Grade: GCSS GA Milestones scores improve in 2022-23, with notable improvement in early literacy
Greene County students continued to show improvement on the 2022-2023 Georgia Milestones assessments, according to the results released by the Georgia Department of Education on July 28. Average scores increased or held steady at each grade band, compared to the 2021-2022 school year, with strong gains displayed in the critical area of third-grade literacy.

Chad Smith announced as new GCHS athletic director
Chad Smith has been tabbed as the Tigers' new athletic director. Smith, most recently the athletic director at Central Gwinnett High School, steps into the position with 25 years of experience.

GCSS announces new Director of Teaching and Learning
The Greene County School System is pleased to welcome Crystal Parten to the district leadership team as the Director of Teaching and Learning. In this role, she will be primarily responsible for curriculum choice, planning, alignment, and implementation, all of which are crucial to a school district’s essential function of teaching and learning.

GCSS names 2023 Exemplary English Learner Student and ESOL Teacher
The Greene County School System has named GCHS senior Sherlyn Camacho-Bustamente as the district’s 2023 Exemplary English Learner (EL) Student and Donna Lund as the GCSS 2023 Exemplary ESOL Teacher. Both will proceed to the statewide competition for Exemplary EL Student and ESOL Teacher.

GCHS senior accepted to 50 colleges and universities commits to UGA for Fall 2023
Jai’Lyn Armour, GCHS Class of 2023, has committed to attending the University of Georgia close to home in Athens this fall, although he did not have a shortage of options. Jai’Lyn has been accepted to 50 colleges and universities, as far north as Pennsylvania (Lincoln University) as far west as St. Louis, Missouri (Harris-Stowe State University) and as far south as Miami, Florida (Florida Memorial University).

BOE chairman retires, new chairman and District 4 representative appointed
On February 15th, Greene County Board of Education Chairman Mike Lynch submitted a letter of resignation to Governor Brian Kemp—resigning from his position effective February 28, 2023. The Board has appointed District 4 Representative Dr. Perry Lee to fill the Chairman position for the remainder of the unexpired term, and appointed community member and retired educator Dr. Maggie Kjer to fill the District 4 Representative seat for the remainder of that unexpired term.
