Greene County School System celebrates gains in Georgia Milestones performance
The Greene County School System is proud to announce a marked improvement in student performance on the Georgia Milestones Assessments for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Georgia Milestones Assessment, which is administered in grades 3-12, is just one measure of many that the Greene County School System uses to measure academic progress, and this year, the results showed increased proficiency and a considerable reduction in beginning-level learners on 13 out of 19 Georgia Milestones assessments.

GCSS names four students to 2025 REACH Georgia Scholarship cohort
The Greene County School System (GCSS) has named four 8th grade students to this year’s class of REACH Georgia Scholarship recipients. Jaxxon Armour, Jaylen Greene, and Ma’Chal Teemer from Anita White Carson Middle School and Taylor Wheeler from Lake Oconee Academy make up the Greene County School System's eighth class of REACH scholars since the school system joined the program in 2017.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and this year's campaign is a continuation of the district's ongoing efforts to combat chronic absenteeism, a challenge that has affected schools nationwide.

Greene College & Career Academy enters 7th year as a model for student success and community impact
The Greene College & Career Academy (GCCA) at Greene County High School is celebrating its seventh year of operation as the cornerstone of career-focused education in the region. One of just 41 active college and career academies in Georgia, the GCCA continues to achieve remarkable milestones, with one of its most recent accomplishments being a perfect score on its five-year accreditation review by the Technical College System of Georgia.

Superintendent Houston Invited to Join Gov. Kemp's Superintendent Advisory Council
The Greene County School System is proud to announce that Dr. Chris Houston, Superintendent of Schools, attended his first meeting as a member of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s Superintendent Roundtable. The group met in Atlanta at the Governor’s Mansion in July. Dr. Houston is one of only 10 superintendents statewide selected for this panel.

GCSS welcomes Dr. Kimberley Simmons as Director of Special Education
The Greene County School System is pleased to welcome Dr. Kimberley Simmons to the district leadership team as the Director of Special Education. In this role, Dr. Simmons is primarily responsible for overseeing the district’s Special Education program and collaborating with teachers, support staff, and administrators to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment for students with disabilities.

GCSS CFO Dean Ware announces retirement, Assistant CFO Connie Wilkes named new CFO
The Greene County School System’s longtime Chief Financial Officer Dean Ware has retired after 17 years with the district. Previous Assistant CFO Connie Wilkes has been named the new interim GCSS CFO.

GCCA CEO John Ellenberg named Principal of GCHS
Greene College & Career Academy CEO John Ellenberg has been appointed as the new interim Principal of Greene County High School. In this dual role, he will continue to lead GCCA while overseeing GCHS, a combined leadership model that has been successful in several neighboring rural school districts with high school college and career academies.

Dr. Russell Brock named Assistant Superintendent of GCSS
Dr. Russell Brock has been named one of the Assistant Superintendents of the Greene County School System. Dr. Brock, who will continue his current responsibilities which include managing human resources and the district’s school safety program, will share assistant superintendent responsibilities with current Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rotonya Rhodes.

GCSS recognized by state department of education for behavior program implementation
The Greene County School System has been recognized by the Georgia Department of Education for its implementation of the state-wide behavior initiative Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Greene County High School and Anita White Carson Middle School are recognized as Operational PBIS Schools, which indicates schools implementing PBIS with a high degree of fidelity, and Greene County Primary School is recognized as an Emerging PBIS School, which indicates schools that have developed most of the critical elements of PBIS.

GCSS attendance campaign sees success in early stages, with improvement at all levels
The Greene County School System has successfully begun an attendance campaign this year to address a chronic absenteeism challenge that has affected schools locally and across the nation since the COVID-19 Pandemic. Comparing Fall 2022 to Fall 2023, Greene County Schools saw the percentage of chronically absent students decrease at every school, by 6% at Greene County Primary School, 11% at Carson Middle School, and 4% at Greene County High School.
