Dear Parent/Guardian:

In light of recent news stories regarding the safety and authenticity of solar eclipse glasses, we have decided not to distribute glasses to students and staff on Aug. 21 to view the solar eclipse. We will still, however, delay dismissal by 30 minutes for all students because the eclipse will occur around 2:40 p.m., which is around our normal time of dismissal for some schools.

In lieu of going outside to view the eclipse, teachers will lead instructional activities centered about this occurrence. Please remind your child that while they will be in a well-lit classroom, it will still appear like evening or nightfall outside.

Please know that we apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause you or your child. The safety of our students is our number one priority, and we want to make sure that this is a positive experience for all.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s principal.

Important Reminders

Dismissal will be delayed by 30 minutes at each school for all students (bus riders, walkers, and car riders). Delaying dismissal will ensure that our students (especially our youngest students) are not loading buses while the eclipse is at its maximum.

• Teachers are planning instructional activities around this occurrence.

• Remind students that during the eclipse, the sun will be mostly covered by the moon in our area. It will appear like evening or nightfall. Students should not try to go outside or look up at the sky.
